Had a sling snap on a 30 ton pick last Thursday

Was lifting a 12,000 lb HVAC unit at a jobsite near downtown Portland and suddenly heard that awful pop. The nylon sling just gave way right near the eye splice, no warning at all. Lucky the load was only a foot off the ground so it just thumped down on the dunnage. Anyone else had a sling fail on a routine lift like that?

30 ton pick and you used nylon?

Whoa hold on, I see it a little different. Nylon slings have a solid safety factor built in, usually 5:1, so a 30 ton pick with properly rated 10 ton slings isn't pushing anything if you're using a good multipart basket hitch. The real issue is sharp edges or chemical exposure, not the material itself. I've run way more than that on nylon in a full choke with rated hardware and never had a sweat.

Read a report saying chemical exposure weakens slings way faster than people realize.
