Old timer in Houston said grease the cable before every shift, and I did it for 11 months
He swore it would stop the rust and keep the drum from chewing the wire, but the manufacturer's rep at the 2 year inspection pointed at my log book and said I was trapping grit in the strands and I had to swap the whole rope for $3,100, so now I want to know what the rest of you actually do after a rain.
Greasing it every shift for 11 months is wild, my guy. You basically marinated that rope in grit and called it maintenance. Old timer probably meant a light coat once in a while, not a full breakfast for the wire every morning. Now you get to explain to your boss why the drum was fine but the rope cost you three grand.
