Took a memoir workshop in Asheville and the prompt format surprised me
Last month I drove up to Asheville for a weekend creative writing class, mainly to shake up my own process. The instructor had us write from a single overheard conversation, like two strangers at a gas station, and we had to build a scene around just the few lines we caught. I didn't think it would work for me, but something about the limitation made my brain go weirdly specific, like I could see the whole story in about 10 minutes. It ended up being the most alive thing I'd written in months, and now I'm wondering if the best prompts are the ones that force you to use real fragments of life instead of grand ideas. Has anyone else tried taking a prompt from something they actually heard in passing, or are you all more about the 'what if' style? I'd love to hear what kind of prompt settings get people out of a rut.

Real overheard lines always sound flat when you put them on the page. I tried that exact thing once, caught a guy at a bus stop complaining about his ex-wife’s garden gnomes, and it was just two people whining with no shape. Your brain fills in the gaps for you in the moment, but the reader doesn’t have that shortcut, so the scene falls apart. What if prompts force you to invent a logic and a payoff, which is what actually makes a story feel complete. Writing from random real talk is like building a house on a patch of grass you happened to walk past. It works for a weekend exercise, but it’s not a reliable way to build a whole draft.
