Finally got my property tax bill corrected after paying a $150 fee for a title search

Honestly, I had an old lien from a previous owner pop up when I was trying to refinance my house. The title company charged me $150 to do a deep search and get the paperwork to prove it was paid off years ago. It felt like a lot at the time, but having that document in hand let me dispute the error on my credit report linked to the address. Has anyone else had to deal with a lien from a past owner messing with their housing credit?

Oh man, my friend had a similar headache. An old contractor's lien from like two owners back showed up when she was selling. She had to pay to get it cleared too, total pain.

Actually, the seller still has to clear liens before closing (thank goodness).

Didn't that used to be the seller's problem to fix before closing? I remember my aunt getting stuck with a lien from a deck that was never even built on her property. The title company found it, and she had to chase down the old contractor who was long out of business. It took months of letters and legal threats to get him to file the release. The whole system feels so unfair to the person who just happens to own the place last.

The whole system feels so unfair" is right, I used to think it was just paperwork until it happened to me.
