My mortgage guy in Cincinnati told me to pay down my credit card before applying, and he was actually right
When I started looking at houses back in March, my credit score was sitting at 618 and I figured I was stuck renting for another couple years. The loan officer I talked to at a small bank in Cincinnati said something that surprised me: he said don't bother disputing old stuff right now, just throw every spare dollar at my $2,300 Capital One balance for 60 days and see what happens. I was skeptical because everyone online says you need to dispute collections first, but I did what he said and paid $400 a month for two months. My score jumped from 618 to 671 by the time I applied, and I got approved for an FHA loan at 6.2 percent. The weird part is I never touched the two old medical collections on my report, the lower card use just did more than I expected. Has anyone else had a lender push paying down balances over disputing, and did it work out the same way for you?
