Comparing two cult docs back to back, the small one hit way harder
Last month I watched that big Netflix series about the group in Oregon, then the next night I put on a 40 minute YouTube doc some ex-member made about the same group. The difference was wild. The Netflix one had all this slick reenactment stuff and dramatic music, but the DIY one just had the guy talking to camera showing old letters and receipts. That simple stuff made it feel real. I think the polish actually dulls the impact, makes it feel like a movie. The raw one stuck with me for days. Has anyone else noticed that smaller projects get closer to the truth than the big budget ones?
