Hot take: I used to say all cult leaders are obvious, until a survivor in Boise asked me one question
She asked if I knew how many members of her group held normal jobs and had families who never suspected a thing for 8 years, and that single question made me drop the whole "how did nobody see it" angle from my posts and focus on the slow stuff instead.

Normal jobs and families just mean good liars exist everywhere, not that the slow stuff matters more.
