Talking with my aunt about the 1978 Jonestown tapes hit different
My aunt used to listen to those CBS radio reports on a transistor in Fresno, and last week she told me how her whole church group debated whether the Kool-Aid story was real before the photos came out. She said nobody back then had a name for the warning signs, just a feeling that something was off with the leader's tone. Hearing her describe the slow trust building over months, not years, made me look at current cult coverage different. Has anyone else had a family member who lived through that era and saw the parallels before the documentaries did?

Honestly the "feeling something was off" thing is way overblown, most people in those groups were totally fine and it's only in hindsight that everyone claims they sensed danger. And tying it to today's stuff is a stretch, a church group in Fresno debating a radio report is not the same as whatever leader you're thinking of now. Not every tight group with a weird guy in charge turns into Jonestown.
