The $200 'exit counseling' session that actually snapped my cousin out of it
After my cousin spent 6 months in that Ohio-based 'self mastery' group, a former member charged us $200 for a 2 hour phone call and walked us through their specific belief triggers, and it worked better than the 4 books I'd read, has anyone else found direct ex-member coaching more effective than any book or documentary?

Oh wow, see I get where you're coming from, but I've gotta push back a little on the "books have fact checking" bit... I've read three of those big recommended books and two of them had straight up errors about how the groups actually do their exit talks. That ex-member might have their own bias, sure, but they also lived it, and that's a whole different level of detail than any book can give you. The timing thing about six months is real, but that's also exactly when a lot of people get stuck, because the group starts twisting doubts back into loyalty, so having someone who knows those exact twists can make a big difference. It's not a magic key, but it's not just a lucky match either, it's more like having a map for a specific building versus a general guide to the city.

Paid help is paid help, and that ex-member sold you a story, not a cure. A 2 hour call for $200 sounds like they just told your cousin what they wanted to hear, then patted themselves on the back. Books and docs at least have some fact checking behind them, someone who left a group still has their own bias and axe to grind. Your cousin snapped out of it because they were ready to, not because that person had some magic key. The timing lines up with them being six months in, which is about when most people start to doubt things on their own anyway. If you paid for that call and it worked, great, but don't mistake a lucky match for a real method that holds up.
