After my cousin spent 6 months in that Ohio-based 'self mastery' group, a former member charged us $200 for a 2 hour phone call and walked us through their specific belief triggers, and it worked better than the 4 books I'd read, has anyone else found direct ex-member coaching more effective than any book or documentary?

Books and docs at least have some fact checking behind them, someone who left a group still has their own bias and axe to grind. Your cousin snapped out of it because they were ready to, not because that person had some magic key. The timing lines up with them being six months in, which is about when most people start to doubt things on their own anyway. If you paid for that call and it worked, great, but don't mistake a lucky match for a real method that holds up.
