Appreciation post: I finally turned on 2FA after my email got hit twice in one week
So last Tuesday I get a login alert from my email at like 6:40 in the morning, and I just rolled over and ignored it because I figured it was spam. Two days later my Netflix password stopped working, and that is when it hit me someone was actually in there. I had been using the same password since college, and of course it was in like four different data breaches, so it was basically sitting there waiting to get grabbed. I spent that whole Friday night changing passwords on 19 different accounts, and let me tell you, doing that without a password manager was a nightmare. I finally set up 2FA on my email and bank using an authenticator app instead of text codes, since I read texts can get intercepted. The weird part is it only took me about 20 minutes to set up, which is way less time than I spent panicking. Anyone got tips for backing up those recovery codes somewhere that is not just a screenshot on my phone?
Figured 2FA was overkill for years and kept putting it off because I thought it would be a hassle every time I logged in. Then my Spotify got jacked and someone tried to buy gift cards with my card, and setting up the app took maybe 15 minutes total. Now I barely notice it, the app just pops up and I tap yes. For the recovery codes I printed mine and stuck them in a folder with my passport, screenshots on your phone are gone the second someone grabs it. Paper in a drawer sounds dumb but it works.
