Had a similar scare on a trip last year. Did a factory reset on the tablet as soon as we got home, which wiped everything but got rid of the lock. Now we only use a VPN app on public wifi, it seems to block that junk.

That reminds me of the time my laptop got a virus from a sketchy hotel wifi.

Hotel wifi is basically a public petri dish for malware. My friend's computer started opening browser tabs for weird supplements all by itself after a conference trip. Took him a week to clean that mess up.
