A mall cop in Rochester told me my dead mall photos were boring, so I changed one thing and it fixed everything
I was shooting the empty JCPenney wing at a mall off I-390 in Rochester and the guy doing security walks up and says my shots all look the same because I keep standing at eye level in the middle of the hall. He told me to get low, near the floor, or shoot from an escalator landing looking down, and honestly it made the whole set feel like a real place instead of a hallway with lights off. Does anyone else get better shots crouching down by the old fountains, or am I just late to this?
How low are we talking though, like full on sitting on the tile or just kneeling? I ask because I tried the crouch thing at the old Sears entrance and got a way better shot of the ceiling tiles sagging, but then my knees were wrecked after like twenty minutes. Do you bring a towel or something to kneel on, or are you just out here ruining your jeans for the craft? Also curious what lens you're using that low, because when I dropped down by the fountain my wide angle made the floor tiles take up half the frame and it looked weird.
