Factory refurbished phone for $220 or used for $180, I went cheap and regret it

Was torn between a $220 factory refurbished phone with warranty versus a $180 used one from a random seller. Grabbed the used one and got burned, battery lasts half a day and the screen has a dead spot near the top. The refurb might've had zero issues and a return policy, but I wanted to save that extra cash. Is the gamble ever worth it, or do you always pay the premium for peace of mind?
