My bank account got hit for $29.99 three times after a free trial I never agreed to
This happened a month ago in Phoenix when I clicked a pop up for a "free" phone cleaner app from a Facebook ad. The app worked for like six days and then started billing me $29.99 weekly under a name I didn't even recognize on my statement. I called my bank on a Tuesday and they said this same merchant had charged 4,000 other people in the same week. The app store page is gone now and the company email bounces back. Anyone know a good way to report these ghost subscription apps so they actually get shut down?
Googling "free phone cleaner app" is basically signing up for a weekly donation to a guy named Dmitri who lives in a basement somewhere. The trick with these is the charge shows up under some nonsense name like "HZQW Digital Svcs LLC" so you can't even tell what it is until you dig. Reporting it to the FTC helps build a paper trail but don't hold your breath on a shutdown, since these things just pop up under a new name the next day. Best move is calling your bank and asking for a chargeback plus a block on that merchant, because you agreed to nothing and they know it.
