One seller's 30 second call made me stop trusting 'free shipping'

Tbh I used to just click buy when a listing said free shipping. Then last month I ordered a $12 desk organizer from a seller in Cleveland. The package arrived but with a $4.50 COD charge from the courier. I called the seller and they said it was 'handling fees' they forgot to mention. Dude told me straight up, if you see free shipping on a marketplace, check the fine print or just ask. Now I message every seller before checking out. Has anyone else had a hidden fee pop up like this?
