TIL those 12 packs of socks for $8 online are not the same as the $8 packs from 2005
My kid needed socks for school back in August so I grabbed one of those 12 packs for $7.99 off a flash sale, thinking great, cheap and done. Three weeks later half of them had holes in the toes and the elastic was shot, meanwhile I still have a pack I bought at a store in Council Bluffs around 2005 that my oldest wore and handed down twice. That is when it clicked for me that the count on the package went up while the cotton went down, they added more pairs but made each pair thinner so the price per pair looks amazing. I started checking the tags and a lot of these deals are mostly polyester now, like 60 percent or more, when the old ones were mostly cotton. It matters because you end up buying three cheap packs a year instead of one good pack every few years, and I ran the math on my own receipts, I was out $34 in one year versus $12 once. So now I flip the package over first and if I cannot find a cotton number I just walk, that is my whole test. Anyone else noticed the fabric weight thing or is it just me getting old and fussy about socks?
Same thing happened with paper towels and trash bags, you pay the same price but everything got thinner and flimsier. Once you start flipping packages over you can't stop noticing it everywhere.
