Decluttering with the KonMari method versus just tossing things in boxes
Six months ago I tried Marie Kondo's approach on my spare bedroom, holding each item to see if it sparked joy. It took me four weekends to sort through everything and I only ended up with two garbage bags of donations. Last month I just grabbed three contractor bags and tossed anything I hadn't touched in a year without thinking about it. That room was done in one afternoon and I haven't missed a single thing I threw away. Has anyone else found this method works better or did I just do the KonMari thing wrong?

Oh, I've been through this exact same thing! I tried the KonMari method on my kitchen cabinets a few years ago and spent an entire Saturday holding every single spatula and measuring cup. I maybe got rid of half a box of stuff. Then last spring I just went through the same cabinets with a trash bag while the coffee was brewing and tossed anything with a cracked handle or that I hadn't used since the Obama administration. Felt a little guilty at first but honestly it's been a year and I don't miss that broken garlic press or the ugly serving bowl my sister gave me. Sometimes being quick and decisive works better than all that soul searching over kitchen gadgets.

That "toss anything I hadn't touched in a year" approach is exactly what worked for me. I did the KonMari thing in my closet and kept a bunch of shirts I "might wear again" that still sat there for another two years. Finally did the contractor bag method on a Saturday morning and filled three bags in under two hours. The trick is to set a timer and don't let yourself overthink it, if you hesitate more than 5 seconds it stays, if you don't stop moving it goes. Out of probably 80 items I trashed or donated I only regretted one sweater and I found a better one at Goodwill the next week.
