Pro tip: that $50 'viral' cold remedy kit is just honey and lemon packets, I compared it to the label myself
Saw a clip with 2 million likes claiming this $50 kit kills a cold in 24 hours, so I bought one at a CVS in Boise to test it. The ingredient list is literally honey powder, lemon crystals, and zinc, stuff you can get for about $9 total on the same shelf. The video zoomed past the supplement facts panel fast enough that nobody would catch the 4g of sugar per packet. So is this whole trend just people reading the box wrong, or has anyone found one of these kits that actually has something real in it?
Four grams of sugar per packet at $50 a box, that is basically paying craft cocktail prices for a spoonful of fancy tea. My favorite part is the zinc they sprinkle in there like it is pixie dust, since the studies on zinc and colds are all over the place and it sure is not doing anything at that dose. Honey and lemon have been the go to for sore throats since forever, and last I checked a jar of honey and a bag of lemons at the Boise WinCo runs me maybe eight bucks total. So yeah, the kit is real, the magic is not, and the 24 hour claim is doing a lot of heavy lifting. I still keep a mug of the homemade version on the counter every winter, it just does not come with a viral video.
