PSA: that viral 'scientists say' headline about a fake study got me for 2 days until I checked the journal
The tweet said a 2019 study from a university in Ohio proved something wild, so I looked it up and the study does not exist, the author is made up, and the account posting it had 400k likes, so now I want to know how many other 'studies' people share without ever clicking.
Eh, is this really the big deal people make it out to be? Half of science reporting has always been garbage, headlines twist stuff, people share without reading, that was true way before Twitter existed. My uncle still forwards email chains about eggs causing cancer or whatever from 2006, nobody's out there writing PSAs about him. The study being fake is bad, sure, but the fact that 400k people liked a tweet isn't proof that society is falling apart, it just means people scroll fast and hit like on stuff that sounds cool. Honestly the bigger issue is real journals publishing junk that gets twisted, not some made up account farming likes. Pick your battles.
