My mom sent me a deep fake of Tom Hanks selling life insurance and I almost bought it

Last Tuesday she claimed the video was 'incredibly real' and it actually had his mannerisms down perfectly until I noticed the lighting on his glasses didn't match the room. Has anyone else's relatives fallen for really convincing celebrity deep fakes?

A lazy deep fake that messes up lighting details actually feels less dangerous than the good ones since it gives you an obvious tell. Those flawless ones are what should really worry people.

And it's the same with regular scams too honestly. Like the obvious phishing emails with bad grammar and weird URLs, those are easy to spot and ignore. But the ones that spoof your bank's actual number and have someone who sounds professional on the other end? Those are the ones that actually get people. I saw a news story where someone lost their whole savings because the call sounded exactly like their credit union. Bad fakes are basically training wheels that make us feel smart, but the good ones are what we should actually be paranoid about.

My dad almost fell for one of those fake Elon Musk crypto streams last month.
