Am I the only one who skips shade cloth for desert patios?

I used to throw up 80% shade cloth over my Tucson patio every May, but after last summer's heatwave I pulled it all down and now rely on a mix of gravel, potted mesquite trees, and a misting line I built myself. The shade cloth just trapped the hot air underneath and made the space feel like a sauna, plus it killed my view of the Catalina mountains. Has anyone else ditched the cloth and gone with passive cooling tricks, or am I asking for a sunburn disaster in June?
