Found a working swamp cooler trick while visiting my cousin in Tucson

Stopped by my cousin's place outside Tucson last month and noticed his old swamp cooler actually kept the living room at 78 during the 110 heat. He said the secret was swapping the standard aspen pads for the rigid cellulose ones and adding a pre-cooler line to the water supply. Cost him about $60 in parts from a local HVAC shop, and the air felt noticeably less damp. Anyone else tried the pre-cooler setup or is that overkill for smaller homes?

My cousin in Phoenix swore by the same trick last summer, and I honestly thought he was just making it up to sound handy. I’d always figured swamp coolers were what they were, and swapping pads plus adding a water line seemed like overcomplicating things. Then I tried the cellulose pads on my own unit and noticed the air came out cooler and dryer almost right away. The pre-cooler line took maybe an hour to rig up, and for my 1,200 square foot place it made a bigger difference than I expected. So yeah, I used to roll my eyes at that setup, but now I get why people swear by it.
