Heat pump install in Bullhead City, watch the concrete footings
Stopped by a friend's place near the river last week and his new heat pump pad was already cracking, just 4 months after install. The contractor set it right on native caliche without any rebar or expansion joints, and the desert ground shifted under it. Has anyone else seen slab failures out here, or is this just a cheap job problem?

Our own unit in Fort Mohave had the same thing happen back in 2021, the slab cracked right down the middle within six months. The guy who came to fix it said caliche is like concrete itself, so pouring fresh concrete on top of it without a vapor barrier or any rebar is just asking for trouble. He ended up cutting out the old pad, digging down about 8 inches, and pouring a new one with rebar tied in a grid pattern plus control joints. It's been two and a half years now and not a single hairline crack. The extra cost was maybe 300 bucks and honestly it was worth every penny. A cheap job in this heat is never really cheap in the long run.
