That solar contractor in Tucson who laughed at my swamp cooler backup plan
He said 'you're cooling air you already paid to heat' and walked off, but my 14-year-old cooler still runs fine on 90 degree days, so is he right or am I just stubborn?

That guy sounds like a real piece of work, laughing at you instead of just answering the question. Honestly, if your cooler keeps you comfortable on those brutal 100 plus days, that's what counts, not some theoretical math about heat... swamp coolers have their limits for sure, but 14 years of running fine is proof enough you're not just being stubborn. Maybe he was having a bad day, but mocking someone's setup instead of offering advice is just rude. You do you, and keep that old cooler humming.

Read somewhere that swamp coolers drop efficiency like crazy once humidity climbs past 30%, but Tucson's dry heat is basically their home turf.
