Old mechanic at a pilot in Ohio told me something that stuck

I was changing a fuel pump on a 2001 freightliner outside Columbus and this retired guy comes over, watches for a minute, then says "you're fighting the rust instead of working with the patience." He showed me how to tap the bolts a certain way with a brass punch and they came loose in half the time... has anyone else had an old timer drop a simple trick like that on you?

My old man taught me something similar with seized exhaust manifold bolts on a Ford van. He had me heat them with a small map torch first, then hit the head of the bolt straight on with a hammer before trying to turn. That little shock from the tap breaks the rust bond just enough. Works way better than just cranking on the ratchet and snapping things off.

That shock tap tip saved me, @scott.olivia - I once smacked my own thumb instead of the bolt.

Heat and a whack unlocks damn near anything.
