Rant: Saw a 'diesel mechanic' at the county fair in Springfield using a kitchen knife on a fuel line

I was at the fair in Springfield last weekend and walked by a food truck that had broken down. The guy working on it said he was a diesel mechanic and was trying to fix a cracked fuel line on the truck's generator. I mean, idk, maybe it's just me, but using a serrated kitchen knife and a roll of duct tape to try and make a splice was a new one. Has anyone else seen a repair that made you just stop and stare?

My buddy watched a guy at a campground try to fix a leaking radiator hose with a strip of an old inner tube and about thirty zip ties. He said it looked like a black rubber spider was hugging the engine. The zip ties melted in about five minutes once the truck got going. He had to pull over and call a real tow truck.

Oh wow, that story really shows how desperation can override common sense. What gets me is the amount of effort he put into that bad fix, cutting the inner tube and attaching all those ties. He probably felt so clever for a minute, but that's a lot of work just to make a bigger mess. It makes you wonder if he even considered how hot an engine gets.

Did he at least wash the knife first? That's just asking for grit in the line.
