My 4K portfolio got passed over for a pixel artist on Instagram

Last week I spent 30 hours rendering a detailed character sheet for a studio gig, and they picked someone who posts 64x64 sprites with zero shading. Has anyone else had clients choose simpler work just because it looks more "retro" or trendy?
