My latest piece hit 500 likes on a big art site and I'm still confused
I posted a new digital painting last week, just a simple portrait with a soft background. It wasn't my most complex work, honestly I rushed the hair details. But for some reason, it got shared a bunch and the likes just kept climbing. I checked my stats this morning and it's sitting at 512. My usual stuff gets maybe 50, 100 if I'm lucky. I think the color palette really clicked with people, lots of muted blues and a single bright yellow flower. It's weird because the piece I spent two weeks on before that got barely any notice. Makes you wonder what actually makes people stop and hit that button. Has anyone else had a simpler, less 'finished' piece blow up compared to your more polished work?

Unfinished looks just feel lazy, not relatable.

It's funny you mention the hair details, because that's probably part of why it did well. A slightly unfinished look can feel more alive and relatable than something super polished. The brain fills in the gaps, which pulls people in. Your color story with that pop of yellow was likely the main hook, though.
