My folder system from 2019 is haunting me after 3 laptops

I used to name everything like 'final_v2_REAL' and toss it into one giant Downloads folder. Now I'm staring at 14,000 files with no dates, and trying to sort them into categories like 'receipts' or 'tax docs' feels impossible. When did you all finally give up on the old way and start a clean system? I need a fresh plan before tax season hits in February.
