Client told me my portfolio was "too polished" and I actually changed how I present my work

Had a remote client from Austin last month look at my site and say it looked like I bought my projects from a template. They said they wanted to see more of the mess and the fails. At first I was annoyed but then I started adding behind the screenshots and rough drafts to my case studies. Honestly it's working way better. Clients ask more questions and seem to trust me more. Has anyone else toned down the perfection and gotten better results?

Honestly I'm not sure it's that big a deal to show rough drafts unless you're selling to someone who really cares about process. Most clients just want to know you can deliver the final product on time. Maybe it helps you feel more authentic but I doubt it makes or breaks the deal for most folks.

I noticed the same thing at a coffee shop last week where the barista showed me the foam before pouring and it felt the same way. People like the finished product way more than seeing how the sausage gets made.

Agree to disagree @phoenix_martin40, showing the messy process actually helps clients trust you more because they see you're human and not just copying stuff from a template.
