That clerk at the courthouse who said 'the paperwork is the easy part'

I was filing my response to the divorce petition last Tuesday in Columbus and the clerk, this older woman who's probably seen a thousand of these, looked at me and said 'the paperwork is the easy part, the hard part is what you do on the drive home.' I thought she was just making conversation, but man, she nailed it. I spent six weeks stressing over every line on those forms, getting the dates right on the bank statements, arguing with my lawyer over custody wording. When I finally handed it in and walked to my truck, I just sat there for 20 minutes staring at the dashboard. Nothing to fill out, no deadline to meet, just the quiet and the weight of what I'd actually done. She was right, the forms only took 45 minutes once I knew what I was doing. It's everything after, the empty house, the shared calendar reminders, the kid dropping his backpack at the wrong door, that's what gets you. Has anyone else hit that weird slump right after the filing was done, like the whole process had been keeping you busy and suddenly there's nothing left to do but feel it?

That clerk knew exactly what she was talking about. The busywork keeps your brain occupied, so when it's over you're just standing there in the silence with all that stuff you've been dodging. Sat in my car for a solid half hour after dropping off my own papers, just watching the clock on the dash do nothing. Then you get home and the house feels different, like it's holding its breath too. The forms are nothing, it's the living with the after that's the real fight.
