Bought a laser level from Harbor Freight for a basement remodel in St Louis and it was off by half an inch across 20 feet.

Yeah, half an inch over 20 feet? That's a lot. I'd double check it against a known level surface if you can, like a long countertop or something you trust. Might just be a bad unit, Harbor Freight stuff is hit or miss in my experience.

Is half an inch over 20 feet really that big of a deal for a level? I mean, unless you're building a rocket ship or something, that's probably close enough for most jobs around the house. I've used Harbor Freight levels for years and they've always been fine for hanging shelves or leveling a fridge. Unless you're doing something super precise like tile work, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Double checking against a countertop is a good idea, but I bet it's fine.
