Update: I used to roll my eyes at bike helmet laws, then I wiped out on Gravelly Hill Road in Richmond last month
I was the type who thought helmet laws were just nanny state nonsense. Figured if adults want to crack their skull open that's their business. Then I hit a patch of loose gravel going maybe 15 mph and went over the handlebars. Landed right on my temple. The helmet cracked clean through. Without it I'd probably be eating through a tube right now. The double standard part? I still see cyclists in Richmond blowing through red lights and dodging cars with no helmet and nobody says a word. But if a kid rides around the block without one you get the cops called on you. When does personal responsibility kick in for grown adults too?

Yeah man I was totally the same way. Used to think helmets were for kids or people who can't ride worth a damn. Then I took a corner too fast on a damp road last spring and hit the pavement sideways. Woke up in the ER with a cracked helmet and a concussion that took months to fully clear. The docs told me straight up that kind of impact usually means a skull fracture or worse. Changed my whole view real quick. Kids need the law cause they don't know better but adults should care enough to wear one without being told.
