Forgot to label layers once and paid for it
Now I always label layers from the start.

Remember when my friend Kyle tried to rush a design last week? He didn't label his Photoshop layers and merged the wrong ones by accident. He had to redo the entire background because he couldn't pick out the correct texture layer. Now he swears by color codes on all his labels, says it keeps him from making those mistakes when he's tired.

Actually, color coding is what I use before I even start naming layers. It's not an extra step at all, it's the first thing I do. I'll make all text layers blue and photo layers green right away. That way everything is sorted visually while I'm building the file.

Think about adding color codes to those labels as an extra step. When you're in a rush and scanning through a huge list, a quick flash of color can save you from picking the wrong layer. It's like a second safety net on top of the good naming habit. Ever try that, or does it just seem like extra work?

That "paid for it" lesson taught me to name groups and folders too, not just layers.
