My brother-in-law, a union electrician, asked me why we still use so many mechanical relays in new installs.

He said 'It's 2024, why aren't you guys just running everything off a PLC and calling it a day?' Made me realize I've been defending old tech out of habit, not because it's actually better. Anyone else feel like our trade is slower to adopt new controls than others?

Ask him who's gonna troubleshoot that PLC at 2am when it bricks itself. Is he volunteering?

Oh man, @barbara_jenkins66, you are so right! That's exactly the question they never want to answer. We had a manager push for some fancy new system last year, and guess whose personal cell phone rang at 3 AM when it crashed? Spoiler: it wasn't his! They love the idea until it's time to actually fix the mess. It's always on us to figure it out while they're sound asleep.
