I finally sketched out a vest for DIY projects

I work at a hardware store and see folks struggle with carrying tools while looking decent. So I started drawing a vest with lots of pockets and durable cloth. The thing is, I want it to be something you'd wear out, not just on the job. For example, how do I add touches that make it stylish without losing function? I thought about using different colors or maybe some subtle patterns. But I'm not sure if that works. Has anyone here designed clothes for specific hobbies? I could use some tips on making practical gear look good.

Honestly, that's a super cool idea. Tbh my main question is about the pockets, because that's where function can mess with style. Are you planning big patch pockets that bulge when full, or something more hidden like welt pockets that lie flat? That choice feels like the biggest hurdle between looking like a tool belt and a regular jacket.

Colors and patterns are key for style, but they can clash with tough fabric. I've seen vests where the print fades after a few washes, ruining the look. How are you testing if the style details hold up?

Welt pockets might lie flat empty, but try stuffing a tape measure in one and see how that sleek look holds up. For heavy use items, angled cargo pockets with reinforced stitching actually look more intentional than bulky patch pockets. @juliaramirez has a point about testing fabrics, so if you add a contrast color for style, make sure it's the same tough cloth as the main vest. I'd put smaller welt pockets higher up for pencils or a phone, and keep the bigger tool slots on the sides below the rib cage.
