Stopped skipping the fabric swatch step and my designs improved

I always picked fabrics just from catalog photos before cutting anything. This caused issues like stiff dresses or colors that looked wrong in real light. So I made a rule to always get small swatches first. Now I drape them, check how they fall, and see them in sun and shade. This tiny habit fixed so many past mistakes. My recent pieces fit better and feel more thought out. I even started a swatch wall for quick inspo. It's boring work but totally worth the extra time.

Finally! Someone figured out fabric isn't just a picture. My cousin learned this after making a prom dress that could stand up by itself. Like yeah, maybe feel the stuff before you build the whole thing. That swatch wall sounds way better than my pile of regret in the closet.

Started getting swatches after a linen shirt felt like cardboard. Now I test drape and color shift in my studio light. It saves me from wasting money on full yards of bad fabric. My designs look more polished because I know how the material behaves. What's the most surprising thing you've learned from a swatch?
