Pro tip: check out the old movie theater marquee in my town for a masterclass in vintage type

I was walking past the old Rialto theater downtown yesterday, the one that's been closed since the 80s. The marquee is still up, just rusting away. I've passed it a thousand times but I finally stopped and really looked at the lettering. It's all hand-painted, blocky art deco stuff, and the way they spaced the letters for 'NOW PLAYING' to fit the arch is genius. The paint is peeling and you can see three different layers of old shows underneath. It got me thinking about how much work went into designing something meant to be read from a moving car 50 feet away. Modern digital signs feel so flat compared to that. Has anyone else found cool design inspiration in a random, run-down place like that?

Yeah, I used to think that old stuff was just outdated. But there's this faded sign on a brick wall near the train tracks for a soda brand that doesn't exist anymore. The way they made the script look like it's fizzing, and the shadow behind the letters isn't just a blur, it's actually drawn with little lines. You can't fake that kind of thinking in a font menu. It makes you see the person who painted it, trying to make a plain word feel cold and bubbly. Totally changed how I look at my own work now.

That hand-drawn fizz effect is pure craft, totally lost in digital now.

Totally, that bit about seeing the person who painted it. It's like their problem solving is frozen in time on the wall. Makes you wonder what they were thinking when they drew those fizz lines.
