Group activities can sometimes add pressure instead of fun. What if someone just doesn't like pickles, no matter how many spices they pick? All that chopping and waiting for fermentation is a lot of work that might not pay off. Using garden veggies sounds nice but not everyone has that option, so it sets a high bar. Turning a personal hobby into a family requirement could just make people resent it more.
