Had a week where AI art felt like a blessing then a curse in my local art circle
I mean, last month my friend Sarah entered a local gallery show in Portland with a piece she made using Midjourney as a base. She spent like 15 hours tweaking it in Photoshop, adding her own layers and fixing hands. But then another artist, Tom, submitted something that was just a raw AI output with no edits, and they hung them side by side. It caused a huge fight at the opening night, with people saying Sarah's work was still 'real' and Tom's was cheating, even though both used AI. The gallery owner didn't know what to do, and now they're talking about banning all AI art next year. Has anyone else seen this kind of split happen in a local show where some AI works are okay and some aren't?

Call the whole thing hypocritical and say the gallery should have banned both or neither. Sarah spent 15 hours on her piece, great, but she still started with a machine's idea. Tom was just more honest about how little he did. The real problem is artists getting precious about their process when everyone uses reference images, brushes made by other people, and digital tools that do half the work automatically. Either the outcome matters or it doesn't. You can't gatekeep based on how long someone stared at a screen.
