Am I the only one who thinks digital drafting is killing the feel of hand drawing?

I've been drafting for about 12 years now, mostly doing residential work. Last month I had to sketch out a quick floor plan for a client in Austin and I grabbed a pencil instead of pulling up AutoCAD. It felt way more natural and the client actually liked the rough look better. But then my boss says I'm wasting time doing stuff by hand when the software is faster. Is old school drafting still worth doing or am I just being stubborn about keeping up with the times?

Had a buddy explain the algorithm is just pattern matching, not magic

I used to think social media algorithms were some super smart AI picking what I needed to see. But last week my friend Dave, who works as a data analyst, broke it down for me over beers. He said it's basically just looking at what I linger on, what I share, and what people like me click, then serving up more of that same stuff. He showed me on his own phone how watching three cooking videos in a row made his feed all recipes for a whole day. It hit different because I realized the algorithm doesn't care about truth or quality, it just wants me to stay on the app. So now when I see some wild conspiracy video trending, I get why the algorithm pushed it in the first place. Has anyone else here tried gaming the algorithm to prove how predictable it is?

Can we get a deep dive on why construction plans keep calling for PEX on hot water recirc lines?

I've been plumbing for 12 years and in the last 6 months I've seen three new builds where the engineer spec'd PEX for the hot water recirculation loop. That's a known failure point because the constant flow eats the pipe from the inside out. Last job we had to repipe a whole 4,200 square foot house after 18 months because pinhole leaks showed up. Has anyone else run into this and found a good way to push back on the spec without getting fired?

Everybody defends AI art by saying it's just a tool, but my neighbor runs a DnD commission business and she's lost half her clients in 6 months

I keep hearing people say AI is just like Photoshop or a new brush. But my neighbor has been drawing custom characters for 8 years. She had regulars who spent $60-$80 per piece. Now those same people are generating their own party images with Midjourney and sending her screenshots like it's cute. She's down from 15 regular clients to 7 since January. That's not a tool, that's taking food off a real artist's table. Who else has seen this up close in your own circle?

Just realized why my friend stopped asking for movie recommendations

I was at a bar in Brooklyn last weekend and my buddy Mark told me he quit asking me what to watch because I always recommend stuff that's too slow or artsy. He said 'you suggested that French film about a snail and I fell asleep in 15 minutes.' He's got a point though. I keep forgetting not everyone wants to sit through a 3 hour slow burn just to get a payoff at the end. So what do you recommend to people who just want something fun and fast without it being dumb?

Ngl, I walked into a job at an old warehouse off Colfax last week and the main alarm panel looked like a spaghetti monster threw up in it. Has anyone else run into a situation where the previous installer just left zero labeling on the zones?

Changed my mind about torque wrenches after a gearbox job on a King Air 200

Always thought my old beam-style Snap-On was fine, but I borrowed a digital CDI model from a guy at the hangar in Wichita last month. The difference was night and day when I torqued the prop bolts to 350 inch-pounds and got zero creep on the reading. That precision saved me from a potential leak at the seal flange, and now I'm saving up for my own. Anyone else switch types and notice a big difference in your checks?

Finally caved and tried that writing prompt app my sister kept pushing

She spent 6 months telling me her daily writing stats from this $5 app while I rolled my eyes, saying real writers don't need gimmicks. Then last Tuesday I hit a total block on my novel draft, downloaded it on a whim, and cranked out 800 words from a single prompt about a broken escalator in a Denver mall. My 3-year-old indoor fern went from lush green to crispy brown in 2 weeks - what changed?

I watered it the same amount as always and kept it by the same north-facing window. Then I realized my wife had turned on the space heater near it every night for two weeks straight. The poor thing dropped half its fronds and the ones left look like potato chips. Has any of your plants gotten zapped by dry heat like that?

Hit 1,000 miles on my old backpacking stove and it still fires first time every time

Picked up a Pocket Rocket back in 2018 for a trip to the Smokies. Figured I'd replace it after a couple seasons. Six years later and I just checked the log I keep in my gear bag, hit exactly 1,000 miles of trail use this past weekend. Still lights on the first click, no sputtering. Only thing I've done is blow out the burner holes with canned air maybe twice. Anyone else have a piece of gear that just refuses to die?

Right?! That's EXACTLY what I thought too! I always figured there were these super smart computers with all these backup systems and fail safes and stuff. But nope, it's just people all doing their jobs and hoping nobody drops the ball that day. Makes you wonder how anything ever works at all, honestly. It's kind of wild that the whole thing doesn't just fall apart more often. Definitely puts a different spin on "trust the system" when the system is basically just a bunch of people trying not to screw up at the same time!

Hit 500 sourdough loaves baked this morning and I still can't believe it

Jump right in and say that's a real thing. The whole "feel" thing is just muscle memory for your brain, like how after driving the same route for a month you don't even think about the turns anymore. @brooket43 hit on something important. It's not just about baking, it's the same with anything you do over and over. I've noticed that with grilling meat or even just packing my car for a trip. That point where your hands know more than your head does, that's the real win. The 500 number is just a cool bonus.

Walked through a hangar at the local airport here in Dayton last weekend...

I think the guy might have it a little backwards though. Those brass pulleys and the 'give' in the system are more about keeping the original feel and reliability for a vintage plane, not really doing a better job than modern bearings. Idk, old stuff can be tougher in some ways but that slack in the cables isn't exactly performance enhancing.
