Unpopular opinion: a gallery owner in Dayton told me she'd rather show AI art than bad paintings, and I have not stopped thinking about it
I was at a small gallery event in Dayton about two weeks ago and got into a chat with the owner, a woman in her 60s who has run the space for 18 years. I asked her straight out how she felt about AI art coming into local shows, expecting the usual take. She said, "I turn away 10 bad paintings for every one piece I hang, and a machine that copies style still gives me something people want to look at." I said that seems harsh on real painters who worked years on their craft, and she shrugged and said most of them never sold anything anyway. It stuck with me because she was not being mean, she was just running a business with rent due on the 1st. What do you all say to gallery folks who think like her, because my usual speech did not land at all?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but nobody walked into her gallery asking for AI art, she just noticed it brings in more people than the bad paintings do. That's her telling you she'd hang anything that sells, not that she actually likes the stuff.
