Just realized I've been reading torque charts wrong this whole time
So I've been turning wrenches for about 7 years now, mostly on 737s and some regional jets over in Tucson. Last week I was torquing down some wheel bearing nuts and something felt off. The chart said 275 ft-lbs but my arm was telling me that was way too much. I checked the manual again and then I noticed the little note at the bottom about the adapter length correction factor. I never even looked at that line before. Turns out when you use a crow's foot or a swivel socket, the torque reading gets thrown off because of the added length. I've been over-torquing all these years by maybe 10 to 15 percent every time I used an adapter. Nobody ever mentioned this in my A&P classes, and the older guys I work with just barked out numbers without explaining the math. I feel kinda dumb but also relieved I caught it before something snapped. Has anyone else had a similar facepalm moment where a tiny footnote in the manual saved them from a bad habit?

Then a lead mech named Dave pulled me aside and showed me the correction factor table in the back of the manual, and I felt like an idiot for about a week. He told me to think of the adapter like a longer ratchet handle, it changes the lever arm, so the torque at the nut isn't what the wrench says. I started writing the correction factor right on the chart with a grease pencil so I'd see it every time. It's one of those little things that can crack a part or strip threads, and now I check it before I even grab an adapter.
