Pulled two fuel pumps off the same 172 six months apart and the difference scared me
Did an annual on a 172M at our shop in Bakersfield and the fuel pump screens were spotless, like almost new. Six months later the same plane came back for a different squawk and those screens were full of amber varnish and fine grit. Turns out the owner had been topping off from a rusty farm tank on his property the whole time. I showed him the before and after pics side by side and he went quiet. If you guys see clean screens on a high time plane, do you ask about the fuel source or just sign it off?

Man, if the screens look clean and it runs fine, I'm signing it off and moving on, you can't babysit every owner's fuel habits. You gonna start asking guys where they buy gas at every annual, cause that road never ends.
