Went to a con in Chicago and noticed everyone was glued to their phones during the opening ceremony

I was at Anime Central last weekend and like half the crowd was scrolling through Twitter during the big guest announcement instead of watching the stage. Like I get checking your phone but people were literally missing the whole thing. Has anyone else noticed this at cons or is it just me getting old lol?

You ever try sitting in the front row? I started doing that a few years back and it changes everything. When you're up close you can actually see the guests reacting to the crowd and you get caught up in the moment instead of getting distracted by your phone. Also helps to put your phone in airplane mode for the ceremony. I do that for panels I really want to see and it keeps me from checking Twitter every five minutes. The trick is making the choice before you even walk in the room.

Two minutes in the front row and @the_robin already needs a neck brace.

Hate to disagree but front row at conventions is the worst for me. You cant take a decent picture without looking up at weird angles and half the time the guests can't even see you past the stage lights anyway. I sit middle to back so I can actually watch the whole stage setup and not strain my neck. Plus if you arrive late or need to go to the bathroom you're not climbing over a whole row of people getting dirty looks.
