Finally got my first big removal right after years of winging it

Last month I had to take down a huge silver maple near a driveway in Akron. On my third cut I realized I was still guessing on my notch placement every time. So I watched a video from a guy named August on YouTube and tried his method with the open face notch. It worked perfectly the tree landed exactly where I wanted. I saved like two hours of cleanup time and didn't even need to rope it. Has anyone else had a moment where one small change to your cuts just clicked?

Wait, you took down a huge silver maple with no ropes at all? That's wild, I'd be nervous as heck trying that near a driveway.

Messed up my ankle real bad last year taking down a Bradford pear in my own yard without ropes. Thought I'd be fine since it was a small tree but the thing twisted weird and dropped a branch that caught me off guard. Limped around for three weeks just trying to get the stump out. So yeah I get being nervous near a driveway, I still get twitchy around them myself lol.

Oh boy, I gotta push back a little here... ropes just give you a false sense of security with a tree like that. Silver maples are notorious for splitting and dropping limbs without warning, so being tied to it can actually get you in more danger if things go sideways. I'd rather have my feet free and a clear escape path than be anchored to something that might fall on me.
