My uncle told me to never top a pin oak, but the client insisted

He said it would send up a dozen weak leaders and ruin the tree's structure. We did it anyway on a job in Dayton last fall, and now the homeowner is calling me weekly about all the new, spindly growth. Anyone have a good way to explain this to a customer after the fact?

Man, that's a classic case of topping. It's not just weak leaders, the tree goes into panic mode. All that new growth is poorly attached and will snap easily in a storm. You gotta tell them it's a structural problem now, not just a looks thing.

Tbh I think "panic mode" is a bit generous to the tree. It's more like it's just scrambling to survive, throwing out whatever growth it can with whatever energy it has left. The structural thing is spot on though, that's the real issue people overlook.

Dayton last fall? I mean, you already saw this coming from a mile away.
