Overheard a homeowner at the nursery say they never water their maple because 'it's a tree, it knows what to do'
That poor tree has been dropping leaves since June and she asked me why it looks sick, so I guess nature doesn't teach self-care after all, has anyone else had to explain basic watering to someone who should just stick to buying fake plants?

Actually a lot of established trees can go weeks without extra water once their roots are deep. I've got a 20 year old silver maple in my backyard that I've never watered once and it's perfectly healthy with full green leaves every summer. The issue might be the type of maple or how long it's been in the ground. A newly planted tree definitely needs regular water for the first couple years. But an older tree with a good root system can usually find what it needs on its own.

It's kind of funny how this applies to so many things in life... we overwater things that are actually fine on their own. My neighbor freaks out every time her lawn looks slightly brown in August, but it always bounces back. Sometimes nature knows what it's doing better than we do, I guess.
