A field archaeologist in New Mexico told me my trowel technique was destroying stratigraphy
She said I was scraping instead of slicing, and after I switched to a gradual, controlled motion, I stopped mixing up soil layers on my dig near Santa Fe last month, has anyone else gotten humbled by a veteran's observation on basic tools?

Funny how tiny motions can mess up whole systems in life.

Tiny motions can mess up whole systems" - yeah, tell that to my trowel (and my ego) that day. The veteran basically watched me for five seconds before she sighed and said "you're mining, not excavating" which is wild because I thought I was doing great. Now I feel like my past digs were basically just me aggressively tickling the dirt instead of actually cutting through it cleanly. Kind of makes you wonder how many layers I annihilated before someone finally told me I was doing it wrong (probably a lot, honestly).
