Dropped $180 on a used star tracker, and my first shot of Andromeda came out sharper than anything I got all winter
I grabbed a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer off a guy in Phoenix for $180 after fighting with tripod-only shots for 4 months. First clear night out, 90 second subs of Andromeda, and the stars were actually round instead of little dashes. Anyone else find that one cheap upgrade did more for their photos than a whole new lens?
Wait, did the mount really fix your shots, or did you just finally get a clear night? Because I fought trailing for months too and mine turned out to be a loose ball head, not the lack of a tracker. Dropping $180 on used gear is great when it works, but I've seen guys buy a tracker and still get egg stars because they never balanced the rig or polar aligned right. Andromeda at 90 seconds is a solid start though, so don't take this the wrong way. My real question is whether the money went to the mount or to the learning that came with it. Sometimes the cheap upgrade is just the thing that forces you to slow down and do the basics.
